Still from ‘Sublimation: Sound & Vision’ installation 2023

It all began when…

…I decided to retrain in fine art photography studying for a masters at Cambridge School of Art in 2014. I had dabbled in fashion photography when I was a Fashion Editor on The Times and The Daily Telegraph and various other publications but it was landscape and environment that interested me more. Prior to my first degree (in fashion) at St Martins in London, I had studied fine art painting and sculpture so felt that I was returning to my creative roots. The camera became my new medium much like paint, print or clay etc plus the extension of video-making and stop frame animation has added to my toolbox.

My creative inspiration draws heavily from the environment, intertwining Kantian ideas of the sublime with pictorial and abstract traditions. However, I seek to evoke a sense of awe and wonder not through grandiose and dramatic landscapes, like those found in the works of artists such as David Caspar Friedrich. Instead, I find beauty and transcendence in the ordinary details and the simple observations of the world around us. The true drama lies in the emotions stirred within, painting a vivid picture dictated by time (in long exposures), the effects of weather, the interplay of shapes, the captivating tricks of light, and the shape-shifting movement that is a constant force all around us. Driven by a deep appreciation for the sublime and a desire to capture its fleeting moments of beauty, I aim to share with others the profound sense of wonder that exists in even the most mundane aspects of life - a creative exploration that celebrates the extraordinary within the ordinary, inviting viewers to pause, reflect and appreciate.
